This is an excerpt from a facebook commentversation I just had with some burner peeple.

Three different space probes have gathered evidence that the top layer of the moon's surface contains hidden stores of water. The moon is generally thought to be a dry place, and the discovery comes as an unexpected -- and exciting -- surprise for researchers.

all sorts of breakthroughs happening

Mars was decided long ago - there are huge amounts of water on Mars, enough to cover the entire planet with several feet of water if it were thawed. Moon was just definitively decided in today's announcement. Not much water there, but enough to provide a permanent output as much water as they would ever need. Good news.

Meanwhile millions starve. Next steps...Let's spend more brazillions on seeing if there is shit in uranus
Theseus Augustus Fixer
@Gabriel - actually largely due to technological advances, often related to the space program, starvation is nowhere near the problem that it was in the 1960s. We have new problems now but nowhere near as serious.
And how do you think we predict the weather, which is related to efficient agriculture? Expensive satellites up in space, that's how.
Not to mention the important role that the Sun plays in agriculture, which is being studied and better understood through space tech.... Read More
The Earth is a really incredibly small chunk of real estate, and everything going on down here is related to the rest of the solar system. You ever hear about a certain asteroid that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? Think that couldn't happen again?

Dood.. its the moon. If it had huge reserves of unleaded gas on it this effort is still a collosal waste of resources.
Gabriel Branch
No new tech was born from this experiment that improves anything here on earth.
Theseus Augustus Fixer
The moon is our nearest jump point to the rest of the solar system. But I know better than to get into an argument with a Luddite. Mmmm, unicorns!
Gabriel Branch
The only tech they improved demonstrably was a more accurate nuclear weapons delivery platform. You know nothing about me so I understand you have to believe that I know nothing about technology or agriculture, it's that kind of self-serving neurosis that leads you to be belligerent and attempt to use a work like Luddite to help elevate your self ... I am not impressed and rather disappointed that you wish you were living in the 3030 instead of being concerned about how we can use our technology and resources and unfortunately money to improve society instead taking pictures of explosions on the moon.

Get yourself a sparkle pony, Gabriel. You will instantly feel calmer. Eating some bacon also helps immensely.

Go buy one for an Iraqi kid and dress him/her up in a furry outfit and pretend you can both destroy huge asteroids with it's rainbow power while you waste away your existence derailing any kind of train of thought that could possibly be constructive.
Liz Niec
yeah while youre on the topic of being constructive.....
fuck. i can feel youre negativity through the comp. theres better ways to make a point. I hope youre as active about these kinds of topics in real life as you are on facebook.

Are you his girlfriend or something? LOL I just hope he can at least understand the concepts. I am not being negative. I am being realistic. Also in case you didn't notice I am not the one doing the name calling. He avoids the rebuttals to his argument and offers no explanations as to how blowing up the moon helps us other than that we can use it ... Read Moreas a moon base while the rest of us sit here on earth and starve to death. My point is simple. Lets spend our resources on shit that actually helps people here on earth. Fix the intrinsic problems here first that could possibly make getting beyond our solar system realized faster instead of lauding a military platform of destruction as some kind of fucking ridiculous progress.
Liz Niec
no, i am a friend, and while i can see your arguements i really dont see how getting in a huff helps anything in the world either. lets go organize a food drive or something!
Gabriel Branch
History has shown us that food drives don't solve the root cause. It's only a band aid. We need to use technology to create a way to feed the world. Give us all water, electricity, education. watch this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gKX9TWRyfs integrate it with your knowledge base. Try to understand why things really are fucked up on this planet and how we can do something that makes sense to fix it.

The lunar water research is just basic science. If you add up all the science spending in the U.S., it is just a drop in the bucket compared to global military spending. Let's try to agree that global military spending is the real problem here, not whittle away at one science program or another.
And aren't the real issues in African starvation the corruption of the governments there? If they let the aid they get already through to the people, everyone would be well fed. How is science to blame for this?
Back to science: The way science works is, you never know how the science will benefit you until the work is done and the engineers begin to take advantage of the things the scientists have learned. Spinoffs from NASA have been documented in so many different ways by so many people. ... Read More
Why not fire all the physicists working on string theory right now? How can understanding the basic principles of physics feed the starving masses?

You think I am attacking science as a whole. I love science. I understand everything you are talking about. I am talking about spending our resources on things that help science and stop wasting resources on a fake excuse to test a weapons platform. Everyone is not being fed. You are living in a bubble. Nanotechnology and physics will help us get there. I am not trying to attack SCIENCE I am advocating the liberal use of it to solve the easy problems.
Almost a Billion. Right, nobody is starving.... cram your bacon up you ass.
Wow I have to say society is indeed sick. The burner population is inundated with this kind of rhetoric that does nothing to solve a single root cause of the problems with society.. The only good thing that has come from the community is Burners Without Borders yet it is still just another lame attempt to band-aid the system.
We will not vibrate out of our bodies in 2012 and ascend to another plane of existence. We have to remove the monetary system. The Zeitgeist Movement is the only thing I have seen that will ever work.
